July 26, 2012

In the past month the youth centre has seen some significant changes: we opened our doors as a drop-in centre, are hosting an anti-bullying workshop over the summer, and have increased our staff number from one to three!

Our first night on June 29 saw almost 40 youth come to the youth centre. Since then the number averages between 20 and 40 youth per night. Not bad for the summer and a new facility! The ages of youth has ranged from six to 20, but our main focus will remain to be 8 to 18 year olds.

Our new staff members include program support worker and Grade 12 student Davonna Kasook and our centre coordinator, Torsten Diesel. Davonna started working at the youth centre on June 28 and Torsten started on July 17. Now that we have employees, we're able to open up to three days per week - Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Stay tuned to our activities page to see what's happening over the next few weeks.

At the drop-in centre, youth have access to the ever-popular pool table, video games on PS3 and Wii systems, books, board games, magazines, craft supplies, computers with internet access and musical instruments. Last week the youth centre hosted a karaoke night and this week will feature a street hockey tournament. More activities and workshops are being planned for the rest of the summer.

We've also received extremely generous donations from members of the community and farther away in Canada. Those donations will help us keep the drop-in centre open and activities planned.

Also a special thanks to our volunteers who have helped supervise youth during this time. Without them we wouldn't have been able to open. Thank you to Nathalie, Jean-Seb, Tiffany, Johnny and Rachel for their work.

Stay tuned for more information and updates about what's happening at the youth centre.
